Recipe: Autumn Fruit Crumble

As the weather cools down, there's nothing like a simple cosy fruit crumble using your favourite autumn produce: feijoas, apples and pears. These are the kinds of fruits you might find in your own backyard or from a neighbour's tree, plentiful, seasonal, and perfect for baking.

Ingredients

Fruit Filling:

3 feijoas, peeled, cored, and chopped

2 apples (Granny Smith or Braeburn are ideal), peeled, cored, and sliced

2 pears (like Packham or Bosc), peeled, cored, and sliced

½ cup brown sugar (or adjust to taste)

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 tsp ground cinnamon

½ tsp ground ginger

1 tbsp cornflour (optional, helps thicken the filling)

Crumble Topping:

1 cup rolled oats

½ cup plain flour

½ cup brown sugar

½ tsp ground cinnamon

¼ tsp ground nutmeg

½ cup cold butter, cut into small cubes

¼ cup chopped walnuts or almonds (optional)

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

2. Prepare the fruit:
In a mixing bowl, combine the feijoas, apples, and pears. Add the sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, ginger, and cornflour. Mix well, then spread the fruit evenly into a medium baking dish.

3. Make the crumble topping:
In another bowl, mix the oats, flour, sugar, and spices. Add the cold butter and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir through the nuts if you’re using them.

4. Assemble and bake:
Sprinkle the topping evenly over the fruit. Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is golden and the fruit is bubbling at the edges.

5. Serve warm with cream, custard, or a scoop of ice cream—whatever you prefer.

This crumble is a great way to make the most of what's in season and on hand. No need to overcomplicate it, just good ingredients and a bit of time in the oven.
