Plant Power

Known colloquially as a citrus bioflavonoid, rutin, sometimes called rutoside, is actually found in a number of plants, fruits and vegetables. Part of a family of over 6,000 flavonoids – which form part of a broader group called polyphenols – these compounds collectively are well known for their potent antioxidant activity, they are also cardioprotective, have an antidiabetic effect, central nervous system activity including helping reduce neuroinflammation and general anti-inflammatory activity. There’s a good reason you should eat a lot of plants, they have many marvelous health benefits, and generally taste good too!

Eating your nutrients is nearly always the best way to get them – even better if you have spray free or organic produce (bonus points for local or home-grown food). We’ve all heard the old saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Interestingly rutin is found primarily in tea leaves and apples. Grandma was on to something.

So why might you want to supplement with bioflavonoids, and in particular out of all the thousands of flavonoid compounds available, and all of the wonderful health supporting properties, why should you be interested in rutin? Well, along with the above-mentioned activity, rutin is also possesses analgesic and anti-arthritic activity. The main way rutin is thought to help with conditions such as arthritis is via its potent anti-inflammatory activity.

So, if you’re experiencing joint pain or other pain in the body, rutin, in conjunction with other natural compounds may offer some relief and without the negative side effects of pharmaceutical pain medications.
